School of Applied Sciences

Practicality and employability are at the forefront of what we do. Our students learn to solve real-life problems by integrating fundamental knowledge with the practical and social dimensions of science and engineering. They experience their subjects first hand through up-to-the-minute course content supported by our state-of-the-art facilities.

We give students the opportunity to carry out their own independent research, either linked to our internationally-recognised research groups or through working in industrial placements or with external professional agencies such as the Forensic Science Service. We ensure our students are equipped with today's practical knowledge to prepare them for the world of work.

Through our industry and professional links we ensure our courses are current and have a real impact on our student's future employability. We run field trips and bring practitioners to speak at many of our lectures so students receive industry input first hand.


We have invested heavily in new equipment so that our mix of multi-purpose and specialist laboratories offers students the space and latest equipment for biological, environmental, and forensic science analysis and research. Chemical and petroleum engineering is supported by dedicated laboratories and equipment, and industry funding supports specialist fire and explosions facilities.

Based at the University the London Food Centre is a great location for learning all aspects of nutrition. New pilot plant facilities are used for developing and optimising new process technologies and our product development kitchen features regularly in our knowledge transfer activities with industry.
