Research across the Faculty of Arts and Human Sciences is managed by our Institute for Social Science Research (ISSR). The institute's vision is to develop and maintain international recognition for their innovative research and educational activities in key areas.

As part of the ISSR, the department of Urban, Environment and Leisure Studies is known for the quality and range of our research and has a strong, international reputation. Department staff advice on key urban, environmental and leisure research agendas including the Swiss Tropical Institute's urban health research programme, the World Health Organisation's Collaborating Centre on Urban Health, the UNESCO World Heritage Committee and the International Real Estate Research Symposium.

PhD Students

The Department is involved in supervising nearly 20 PhD students and several members of staff act as PhD Directors of Studies. To demonstrate how broad our student research interest is past topics have included:

Research Funding

Recent research grants have been obtained from the UK Department for International Development (DFID), the UK Economic and Social Research Council, British Academy, the US National Institutes of Health, South African Medical Research Council.
